Cows, sheep and goats generate roughly half of all agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, and their increased production leads to more than half of all land use change with resulting impacts on both carbon and biodiversity. Global demand for milk is on a course to grow by 80% between 2007 and 2050. However, livestock production is also of great economic significance. This talk will discuss the environmental challenge and strategies for addressing it both globally and with a particular focus on the sustainable intensification of livestock systems in Colombia.
